Sickened [May. 22nd, 2007|02:46 pm]
books R us

ingerbil
I'm trying to think of the last few books I've read, I've just read "Sickened" by Julie Gregory, interupting Anne Dunlop's "Pineapple Tart", but I can't remember what I read before that, I think it was hardback, this is going to annoy me now!

Anyway "Sickened" is a real life tale about Munchausen by proxy, where the mum makes the daughter appear sick so she gets lots of medical tests, one of the mother's goals being to get her daughter a test involving open heart surgery. It's abit like Dave Pelzer's "A Child Called It" but what's intriguing is how the daughter breaks free from her mother and liberates herself from all the beliefs and burdens the mother has put on her.

What was most surprising is I read it in 5 days!

Review: City of the Gods, Sg1 [Mar. 9th, 2007|01:40 pm]

I don't know what to make of this one. I like how it opened with a bit of a prologue before getting into the knitty gritty of the story. Also good to see Nick mentioned again in some shape or form, we haven't had mention of him since the episode he was in.

There was humour from jack and the pronounciations of the names, which was great or else i wouldn't have had a clue what the hell was going on, but i didn't like the stroy because of the names. Aztec names they may have been but a page at the back telling you how to pronounce them would have been brilliant!

There were also references to other books in the series, mainly Sacrifice Moon so i suppose this should be read for COTG's so you know what they're on about, not that its really important but just some internal character musings and memories.

The emotional stuff, especially from jack, was good, makes him more human especially where kids are involved.

Overall, it was good, season 5 or thereabouts in my reckoning anyway.

Serious question... [Mar. 3rd, 2007|05:19 pm]

Ok, the next set of question on the Da Vinci Code are due to be posted next weekend.

So here's the question... Do I post them?

Since the beginning of january when the new set up began it seems that no one has posted anything and the questions have gone unanswered.

I know people are busy etc but what I want to know is this - has the community died  a death or is there still a chance that people will take an interest, post and talk about the questions etc?

I wanted this community to be a hive of conversation on books, possible debates on peoples perceptions of characters in the books but there's been none of that. I don't want this community to become a chore for people, it should b something you WANT TO DO and WANT TO DISCUSS with others in the same boat.

But we'll see.  Can you let me know your thoughts please.

Questions! Angels and Demons [Feb. 14th, 2007|11:17 am]

Q5. The novel takes place during a 24 hour period. How does this narrative structure heighten the suspense in the story? What red herring does the author use to keep the reader guessing? Did you anticipate any of the events in the story?

The next book is The DaVinci Code, another Dan Brown book and the questions will appear in the middle of March.

The Secret Agent questions were quite easy in comparison to these ones, so hopefully they’ll give us something more to bite into and maybe a proper discussion will take place and the questions be answered.

Q4.What role do the media play in the events that unfold? How about Glick and Macri in particular? The media were not interested in covering the election of a new pope until there was tragedy involved. How much influence do the media have on what information is relayed to the public? Is it true, as Glick believes, that “viewers didn’t want truth anymore; they wanted entertainment” p190?

Q3. When he first meet Kohler, Langdon tell him he is “undecided on miracles… I study religious symbology – I’m an academic, not a priest” (p21). Does Langdon change his view on miracles by the end of the book?

Welcome to the February questions on Angels and Demons.

Q1.What is your view of Robert Langdon? What motivates him to find out more about the circumstances of Vetra’s death? Is it merely academic interest? What else in Langdon’s background helps him succeed during this adventure?

[Current Location |my room]

I finished this in the wee hours of the morning and I quite liked it. I was different to the others in the series which is always good but had the same banter and comedy in it as in  the previous books.

From the last book you can see how the relationship between Holly, Artemis and Butler has progressed and how much they depend on each other.

Its really hard to talk about this one, but if I were to be doing my dissertation again, i'd use this book rather than Artemis  Fowl. it was much better, had more mythical and magical elementns and in some way was more funny, lol.

Its not a book that can be read as a stand alone. You would need to read the books in order, just like the harry potter books, although this series is better, lol. No seriously. Its better.

Go read Arty!!!!!

As you can see below, I've posted 5 Secret Agent questions.  Admittedly, they're from a worksheet I found online for 12 year olds, but i think they should be ok now that i added a bit on to each of them, lol.

You now have 2 weeks to answer the questions.

February's book is Angels and Demons.

Please answer the questions!!!!!!!
